Chicago Medical Dermatology Conditions Herpes Zoster (shingles)

One out of 3 people in the US will develop shingles. Anyone who has recovered from chickenpox may develop shingles. The risk of disease increases as a person gets older. Shingles is caused by the Varicella Zoster virus. This is the same virus that causes chickenpox. The virus remains in the body in a dormant or inactive state and can reactivate years later.

Vaccination reduces the risk of re-activation by ~50%.

Systemic antiviral medications should be started as early as possible to reduce the risk/intensity of post-zoster pain. Analgesics (pain meds) can also be used to reduce pain.
