Malignant melanoma (MM) is a life-threatening malignancy that can occur in any tissue that has melanocytes (cells that produce pigment). It can affect any age or ethnicity. MM can arise from within a pre-existing mole or in previously normal skin. The most common location in males in the back. The most common location in women is the back of the legs. Risk factors include: a personal or family history of MM, cumulative life sun exposure, blistering sun burns, pre-existing dysplastic nevi.
