Chicago Medical Dermatology Conditions Melasma

Melasma is also known as Chloasma or mask of pregnancy. It presents as poorly demarcated light or dark brown patches on the face. It most frequently involves the areas around the eyes (peri-ocular) or mouth (peri-oral), however it can be anywhere on the face. There are three primary causes for this condition: hormones (oral contraceptive pills, pregnancy), genetics, and UVA sunlight.

Diagnosis
Evaluation with a dermatologist; a Wood's Lamp exam can help determine the depth of involvement

Prevention
Wide-brimmed hats, broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) sun block

Treatment
Hydroquinone, tretinoin, chemical peels

Course
The condition is often refractory to treatment and has a very high recurrence rate. Speak with your dermatologist before spending resources on expensive therapies.
