Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. It occurs when un-repaired DNA damage to skin cells, most commonly caused by/exacerbated by ultraviolet radiation from sun or tanning beds) triggers mutations, or genetic defects, that leads the skin cells to multiply without regulation forming malignant tumors. Types of skin cancers include: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, merkel cell carcinoma, angiosarcoma, lymphoma (cutaneous T-cell lympoma, B cell lymphomas)

Screening
It is recommended that adults over the age of 40 have their entire skin screened annually by a board certified dermatologist. However, skin cancer can develop at any age. Therefore, we recommend that all patients have a yearly screening, especially if there is a personal or family history of abnormal nevi (moles) or skin cancer.
