Tinea versicolor aka pityriasis versicolor is a very common yeast infection of the skin. It occurs when a normal skin commensal, Malassezia globosa or Malassezia furfur overgrows. The end result are pink, hypo-pigmented, or hyperpigmented scaly patches usually on the chest, shoulders, back, and trunk. The condition can be itchy but is usually asymptomatic.
