Chicago Medical Dermatology Conditions Urticaria

Urticaria is a medical term for hives. Hives are raised, often itchy, red welts on the surface of the skin. They can be the result of an allergic reaction, however they are often time idiopathic (unknown cause). Urticaria is commonly associated with allergies such as to hay fever. When swelling occurs around the lips, eyes, or neck, it is referred to as angioedema. This can be inherent or acquired. Angioedema can be a medical emergency. Urticaria can be triggered by: food, animal dander, medications, insect bites, environment allergens, emotional stress, extremes of temperatures, infection, or more rarely, autoimmune diseases such as lupus.

Treatment
Antihistamines, product avoidance, systemic steroids, or more rarely immunosuppressant therapy for refractory cases
