Chicago Medical Dermatology Conditions Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a condition where the normal pigmentation of the skin produced by melanocytes is destroyed and replaced with white patches. Any location of the body can be affected, however the condition oftentimes appears in patterns (peri-orificial/acrofacial, segmental, generalized). Vitiligo can start in childhood or adulthood. The mode of inheritance is thought to be multifactorial (combination of genetic and environmental influences). There are many theories as to why this condition occurs, including but not limited to autoimmune origin. Subsequently, vitiligo is associated with other autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata, diabetes, thyroid disease.
